Hunt Ontario Biographies...

John Kerr
Managing Editor
John began writing for the magazine in 1976 as a freelancer and has held positions as assistant editor and fishing columnist before becoming Managing Editor. He is also an outdoor columnist for the Toronto Sun newspaper. He spends his time on the water catching many species of fish, including his favorite, steelhead, and can be found in search of waterfowl and deer during the fall.

Steve Cooke
Hunting Editor
Internationally known writer and Hunting Editor for Ontario OUT OF DOORS. Steve has hunted from the Arctic to Africa. Big game is his passion, but he never passes up a chance to hunt small game or waterfowl.

James Smedley
Feild Editor / Backroads Editor
James is a fulltime freelance wirter/photographer as comfortable fishing walleye and bass tournaments as casting the riffles of tranquil trout streams. A resident of Wawa, in the heart of northern Ontario, James shares the duty of producing the magazine's "Backroads" column with co-editor Grant Hopkins, in addition to writing numerous features each year.

Grant Hopkins
Backroads Editor
A contributor to the magazine for more than 30 years and based in Orleans, just outside of Ottawa, this retired Canadian Air Force Major spends his time cruising the backroads and byways of Ontario and lets our readers in on all the secret places he uncovers.

Steve Galea
Contributing Editor
An award-winning magazine and newspaper columnist, Steve lives with his imaginary friends in the Haliburton Highlands. It is his responsibility to make sure we don't take ourselves too seriously. Steve is also an avid hunter and angler and hones his skills throughout the seasons, anywhere from a few steps out his backdoor to all points around the province.

Susan Kane
Cooking Editor
Susan's fish and game cooking columns have been regular features of the magazine since 1989. She has lectured at George Brown College on the benefits of wild game, given hundreds of seminars, cooked for past Prime Ministers, and helped host events at the Ontario Parliament on behalf of the magazine.

She took up the serious preparation of fish, game and wild edibles in 1979, and her favourite meal is roasted wild turkey, which she advises should be cooked upside down with lots of butter.

Luigi De Rose
Field Editor
Luigi has wet a line in three continents, but still loves patrolling down the shoreline of any of the Kawartha Lakes hunting bass. Bass fishing is what drives him. Tournaments, Great Lakes smallmouths, heavy cover laremouths and interesting new lures are always on the mind of this Scarborough resident. When not at the bow of his boat, he can be found perched in a treestand or goose blind come fall. Luigi has been penning articles for OOD for 10 years.

Jeff Helsdon
Field Editor
Jeff lives in Tillsonburg, close to Lake Erie where he likes to fish for most fish the lake has to offer. When the season changes from fishing to hunting, Jeff likes to hunt waterfowl, pheasant and grouse with his dogs. In between, deer and turkey hunting challenge his outdoor skills. Forced to make a living when not hunting or fishing, Jeff works at the Tillsonburg News and operates his own photography business.

Linda Gabris
Contributing Writer
Linda is a full time freelance writer/photographer who grew up in Muskoka, Ontario. She has been contributing to Ontario Out of Doors for a number of years. Linda writes articles and fish and game cooking columns for numerous magazines in Canada and USA. She now lives in British Columbia where she enjoys fishing for whatever catch is in season, upland and big game hunting, foraging for edible wilds and mining for gold.
